Altered the way that some lines are laid out, made functions
more attractive to look at, and tidied up messy areas.

Apart from that a couple of very minor observations but which I'm not
too bothered about.

For future reference, I think we normally fix style issues in the
commit where the new code was introduced (if in the same patch
series), but I'm inclined not to worry for the moment. (Others may
differ, of course!)
